MISSION STATEMENT
High Voltage Youth Camp is a non-profit organization that provides educational as well as recreational programs for economically disadvantaged youth, ages 14-19, to realize their potential, build character, and to function effectively as contributing members of society. We are also dedicated to building community collaborations and partnerships with other organizations that serve youth.
HISTORY OF HIGH VOLTAGE
High Voltage Youth Camp began during the summer of 1991 to provide educational and recreational programs to homeless, run-away, and economically disadvantaged youth living in distressed neighborhoods in the New Orleans area. Activities are held in Louisiana (New Orleans, Loranger, and Marrero) and Mississippi (Poplarville). In the fall of 2003, we developed a school partnership with Joseph A. Cuillier Senior Career Center, a Jefferson Parish high school. This enables us to operate during the normal school year instead of being limited to the summer months. Students enrolled in our programs in Orleans and Jefferson parishes are eligible for high school and college credits. Each year we offer a different program designed to improve students’ skills in: reading and writing, oral presentation, research, and media literacy. Programs also help build self-esteem, critical thinking skills, social responsibility, healthy lifestyles, as well as provide therapeutic recreation. Programs are provided free of charge to all students. Program funding comes from foundations, corporations, businesses, grants, and individuals.
