High Voltage is a non-profit organization that provides educational and recreational programs for economically disadvantaged youth. We are dedicated to helping youth realize their potential, build character, and function effectively as contributing members of society. High Voltage also works to build community collaborations and partnerships with organizations that serve youth.
In the fall of 2003, High Voltage began to collaborate with other non-profit organizations serving youth including Positive Impact, Joseph A Cuillier, Sr. Career Center and New Orleans Video Access Center in order to order to serve more young people in the New Orleans Community
Students enrolled in our programs are eligible for high school (community service) and college credits. Each year we offer programs that help build self-esteem, critical thinking skills, social responsibility, healthy lifestyles, as well as provide therapeutic recreation.
The Girls Circle model is a research-based, best practice model developed by the Girls Circle Association (www.girlscircle.com) It is a weekly structured support group for girls from 9-18 years to encourage the development of strength, courage, confidence, honesty, and communication skills for girls. The goal is to enhance girls' abilities so they are able to take full advantage of their talents, academic interests, career pursuits, and potential for healthy relationships.
Girls Circle aims to counteract social and interpersonal forces that impede girls’ growth and development by promoting an emotionally safe setting and structure within which girls can develop caring relationships and use authentic voices.
When girls voice their ideas and opinions in a safe environment, it strengthens their confidence and self-esteem and encourages them to express themselves more fully and critically think through their behavior and choices. By exam-ining cultural expectations in a safe and supportive setting, girls gain greater awareness of their options and strengthen their ability to make choices that are consistent with their values, interests, and talents.
Girls Circles will be offered weekly starting in 2012.
